Chinatown comes to Dublin

Printer Friendly Version

January 2004 saw the first ever Dublin Chinatown Festival take place to celebrate the start of 2004 - the "Year of the Monkey". Organised by the Dublin Chinatown Festival Committee and supported by the Dublin City Development Board, this festival ran over four days at Smithfield Square.

Between Jan 24 - Jan 27, Smithfield Square was transformed into a lively and bustling Chinatown, where visitors experienced a fusion of Asian and Irish culture. Street traders, a Chinese Foodhall and free Chinese entertainment were to be found at this four day festival.

Festival-goers entered Dublin Chinatown through an authentic Chinese Arch. The Chinese Embassy in Ireland had also kindly donated two large stone Chinese lions as a gift to the festival. To add to the atmosphere, Smithfield Square was decorated with traditional Chinese lanterns, banners and flags.
