Seeking Advice and Redress Against Racism in Ireland: An Information Handbook.

As part of our public awareness campaign, the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism (NCCRI) and Equality Commission for NI have updated the Seeking Advice and Redress Against Racism in Ireland.

The publication gives a detailed account on measures in place that seek to provide protection against discrimination, incitement to hatred and general protection against assaults and abuse. The guide aims to outline an overall approach to addressing racism and discrimination in its various manifestations. It also includes information on the anti-racism strategies in the South of Ireland, namely the Irish Government's National Action Plan Against Racism. A similar publication for the North of Ireland is available from the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland at information@equalityni.org.

The National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism (NCCRI) and the Irish Human Rights Commission (IHRC) organised an information seminar on Friday 10th February in preparation for a proposed follow-up visit by the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD) in 2006. The proposed follow-up by the CERD Committee is new and there is significant interest in Ireland being the first country to be involved with this procedure.

Presentation

PowerPoint presentation delivered by Nathalie Prouvez, Secretary to the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (CERD). The presentation described the proposed CERD follow-up procedure discussed at the Information Seminar hosted by the NCCRI and the Irish Human Rights Commission on 10th February 2006

Cover of leaflet: Reporting on Refugees, guidance for journalistsReporting on Refugees: Guidance by and for Journalists

Asylum and immigration are controversial, newsworthy topics about which people have strong opinions. Journalists have to cover these subjects and let the public have their say about them. The National Union of Journalists Code of Conduct commits journalists to provide coverage that is non-racist. Accurate information presented in a balanced way will counter prejudice. This online leaflet on Reporting on Refugees, written by the NUJ and supported by the UNHCR, NCCRI and Irish Refugee Council is designed to assist working journalists.

Stop Discrimination Website

On the occasion of EU enlargement, at midnight on May 1st 2004, the www.stop-discrimination.info website was re-launched in a new design and in nine additional languages including Czech, Estonian, Hungarian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Maltese, Polish, Slovakian and Slovene. The information portal currently features a total of 20 official languages to make the information on the EU campaign "For Diversity - Against Discrimination" and EU policies combating discrimination available to all citizens of the enlarged European Union.

Do you know how to best deal with discrimination in the workplace? Or how to ensure that your company is discrimination-free? How can employers benefit from actively promoting diversity in their company? And how can employees be sure that their behaviour is not discriminating others? You can find the answers to these questions on five free fact sheets that have been posted on the Internet at www.stop-discrimination.info.
