Photograph of Fairytale Heart

A play inspired by young people and the young at heart!

Directed by Bairbre Ní Chaoimh, Fairytaleheart tells the story of two troubled teenagers in a run down community hall who escape into a world of fantasy to get away from their complicated lives. Krysia, a Polish girl, is running away from home because she can’t accept her father’s relationship with a new woman soon after her mother’s death. Gideon has spent his life living in a series of squats and caravans with his single mother. When Krysia meets Gideon he is painting a fairytale backdrop on a candlelit stage in the hope that it will transform the drab and dreary place into a magical theatre and create an alternative universe for himself and others.

Performed by professional actor Keith Burke and young Polish actor Joanna Sieracka, the production is part of Calypso’s intercultural drama project the Tower of Babel of which Joanna is a member. This project brings together young people from diverse backgrounds and, using each individual’s experience and imagination as the starting point, works with professional actors, choreographers, writers and musicians to devise and develop original dramatic works which transcend the barriers of language, race, religion and differing cultural traditions. In addition to helping the young people express themselves artistically in an intercultural setting, Tower of Babel creates opportunities for young people to consider working in the arts as a career option.

Tower of Babel was recently selected to represent Ireland in Aachen, Germany as a finalist in the European Charlemagne Youth Competition (ECYC) 2008. The aim of the ECYC is to recognise flag ship projects from across Europe that promote understanding and cooperation between different groups of young people, aged between 16 and 30 years.

The play will run in the Project Arts Centre Dublin from 02 – 6 September 2008. Project CUBE, Dublin at 20:15. 6 Performance ONLY.
