International Day Against Racism March 21st / European week Against Racism March 15th to 23rd 2003 Events: Download PDF file In 1960 March 21st was declared International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination by the General Assembly of the United Nations as a reaction to the killing of 70 peaceful demonstrators in Sharpeville, South Africa in 1960. The European-wide Action Week Against Racism takes place each year around March 21st. This year once again hundreds of activities will take place all around Europe, organised by a wide variety of organisations. European-wide activities will range from demonstration and debates to film festivals to cleaning the walls of racist slogans. The National Committee on Racism and Interculturalism (NCCRI) in conjunction with the Know Racism Programme and Equality Commission for Northern Ireland will co-ordinate activities in Ireland and publish a guide of events in the near future. The key themes for March 2003 are gender and the importance of anti-racism training. The Know Racism Programme has given financial support to anti-racism initiatives already planned by groups around Ireland. Events for March 2003 include conferences, anti-racism and intercultural awareness workshops, theatre, documentaries, festivals, radio programmes, food fairs, poster campaigns and art and craft exhibitions. If you are interested in organising an event, it’s not too late! Just submit a description of the event, venue, date and time to the NCCRI before February 10th at Tel. (01) 8588000 or email: info@nccri.ie. You can also order posters for free. Join the European-wide campaign and protest against the prevalence of racism in our society. Events: Download PDF file |
