Community Groups Come Together to Devise Strategies to Tackle Racism

Launch of “Supporting the Implementation of The National Action Plan Against Racism  – A Strategy Guide For Community Development Projects, Family Resource Centres and Partnerships” by Minister for Community Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Eamonn Ó Cuív TD,

Followed by Consultative Forum on for the Community and Youth Sector for EU Year of Intercultural Dialogue, 2008

Date : 2 October 2007
Location: Morrison Hotel, Ormond Quay Dublin 1 2pm-5pm

This strategy guide was developed by the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism (NCCRI) and Pobal in conjunction with Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs and the Family Support Agency(FSA).

The focus of the guide is to support Partnerships, Community Development Projects and Family Resource Centres as key players in the development of locally based anti-racism strategies and social inclusion measures to promote diversity. The guide has a range of tools and supports to strengthen the work of The National Action Plan Against Racism(NPAR) and it will complement the work that local community organisations are already engaged in.

The strategy guide provides practical advice for Community Organisations and local development agencies  who are currently engaged with or are considering developing strategies to address racism and advance equality at local level

The Guide focuses on:

  • guidelines for the development of local strategies.
  • a toolkit of practice examples, key principles, and learning arising from the experiences of community development organisations.

The EU has designated 2008 as the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue. The NCCRI is the co-ordinating body for that initiative. In its coordinating role the NCCRI will work to ensure the widespread participation of key stakeholders and broader civil society in promoting initiatives throughout the year which foster understanding, equality and respect between majority and minority communities in Ireland. The consultative forum will focus on participation of the Community and Youth Sector in the Year.
