Schools Against Racism Poetry & Short-Story Competition

The awards for the 4th annual Schools Against Racism Poetry & Short Story Competition will take place on April 9th in Linen Hall Library, Belfast at 5pm.
The junior and senior poems winners are Luke Griffin from Beneavin De La Salle College, Finglas, and Riona Walsh from Ursuline College, Sligo. The prizes for junior and senior short story categories have been won by Anna Fitzsimons, Assumption Grammar, Belfast and Niall Cosgrave from St Michael’s College, Ailesbury Road, Dublin. And the guest languages prizes go to Rafal Zandarski from Dunshaughlin Community College, Co. Meath in the Polish catetogory and Claire Nevin, Coláiste Naomh Cormac, Kilcormac, Co. Offaly, in the French. All winners will have the honour of being presented a prize by the distinguished poet, Michael Longley, who will also announce the overall winner on the night.
This is the fourth year of the competition, which has seen around 6,000 entrants since 2005, and is the first year that entrants have been able to send in short-stories. The competition aims to raise awareness among young people for the need to tackle racism in all its manifestations and to promote an intercultural Ireland based on principles of mutual respect and equality. The competition is open to all second-level schools in both the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
The competition was organised by Poetry Ireland in partnership with the National Consultative Committee on Racism and Interculturalism (NCCRI) and the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland.
